The End of the World

The End of The World - created by Sean Weham is literally a game about the world ending. It really reminds you that time is limited. Behind all these pictures is an extremely depressing game because of how real it is, so be prepared for some discomfort.

Because this is a game playable on phone only, the controls are simple - touching left or right on the screen moves you in those directions and there are occasionally other interactive objects which flicker. It's simple, smooth and clean with no glitches.

The game art is absolutely stunning - it's a very unique painterly style, making it feel very organic and real. There is no description, no backstory, no dialogue. However the pictures told a tale very well. Music was also fitting, even though the game was mostly silent with a few sound effects, whenever he jumps back in time it plays a very romantic melody.

There are multiple themes in this game - heartbreak, time, taking things for granted, life - simply a very realistic and relatable game. In some areas of the world, there are clocks which you can interact with. Once touched, it takes you back to the past which is shown with red tones, and once released you revert back to the present - the cold tones. From that you can tell he's hurting from a heartbreak as the memories from the past show him with a girl and the general mood is much warmer. I can only say so much about the game or else I'll spoil everything.

I can't really review the difficulty of this game as this isn't an action or puzzle game. This is more of a story game shown through the player's choices. It's interesting how different choices throughout the game bring slightly different outcomes.

One of the downsides of The End of The World was the fact that there is no save point. If you exit the game, you'll have to start from scratch and since it is a fairly long game, it was hard to not take a break and exit. A factor that added to the length of the game was the main character's walking speed - it was painfully slow which I understand is a real walking speed if i compare to real life but to get from point A to B took almost forever! In a sense it did make me admire the art a bit more but when you see the same buildings from day one to three it does get a bit bland.

Overall it is a breathtakingly depressing game which is worth a shot - that is, if you're not a child. Children would no doubt find this bland and pointless as they would not notice the underlying themes but that does not mean they can't enjoy the pretty pictures.
